About me

I'm amazed by what yoga can do for people.

I only started yoga because nothing else at the gym fitted my schedule, but I soon realised there was more to it than just another class. I'm particularly interested in how yoga recognises the link between the body and the mind, because I studied psychology and have a PhD gained through empirical research from a very positivist tradition. That traditional science training was sometimes hard to reconcile with teachings over 4,000 years old, but I've found keeping your mind open can reap rewards.

Many claims are made for yoga, and many are true – but not all. You can't get more oxygen by breathing deeper for example, but you can alter the carbon dioxide levels in your body with beneficial effects.

Yoga is more than just another exercise class. Yoga is more than just stretching and relaxation. Yoga is holistic, but you can start your own journey from many places, so different people will get different things through the stages of their journey.

Psychological benefits include: relief from stress, anxiety, depression and improved concentration and feeling of well-being. Physical benefits include: improved strength, flexibility and balance.

I love yoga because it makes me feel better. I move more easily, feel less stressed and know I have some tools to help when things get tough either physically or mentally. We all need a helping hand on our journey through life from time to time. I love teaching yoga because so many of my students tell me how yoga has helped them, too.

Class structure

What's lacking in an exercise class is a focus on mental and emotional health.

In yoga we use the postures not only for their physical benefits, but as a form of concentration. You will be encouraged to move your awareness inwards, not to perfect how your body looks. Every class includes breath work and a meditation/relaxation session that should leave you feeling refreshed and calm.

01 · Start and finish

Meditation, relaxation

Classes usually start and finish with a short period when we begin to withdraw from our usual daily concerns and sensations and concentrate on the internal world. Meditation is a skill that once mastered, can have profound beneficial effects for the physical body as well as the mind.

02 · The larger part

Asanas postures

Yoga poses have many physical benefits like increasing flexibility and strength and improving balance. They can help prevent injury or aid recovery. They can massage internal organs, improve tone and, just as mental states like stress can make us physically unwell, some poses can help overcome emotional problems.

03 · In every class

Pranayama breathing

We all associate different breathing patterns with emotions: a sharp intake of breath or a sigh of relief. In these cases the breath explains the emotion, but the opposite is also true since altering a breathing pattern can change the emotion we feel. Conscious breathing control is a fundamental element of yoga and leads to chemical changes in the physical body with a range of different effects.

Your interest in yoga can start from many places and you may have never done any, very little, or lots before. Most people find that once they have the right teacher and continue to practise, they feel the benefits in lots of ways. I believe in exploring each student's needs, whatever their starting point, and helping them understand how to meet them.

One class will give you a flavour, but I recommend trying at least 3 or 4 sessions to allow yourself time to get used to the physical postures and begin to see benefits.

Questions people ask

Yoga should be inclusive, not prescriptive.

What style of yoga is it?

I find it difficult to answer this question because I don't follow any one style such as Iyengar, Ashtanga, Sivananda, Bikram, or Forrest. I also use quite a lot of viniyoga techniques, because I find they make the moves more accessible to a wide range of people – but don't be fooled into thinking that equates with 'easy'! I believe that yoga should be inclusive, not prescriptive.

What if I have an injury or medical condition?

Contact me to discuss it, and check with your medical practitioner. Most non-acute conditions are OK in yoga provided you don't strain.

Are there courses? When can I start?

I work in sets of themed classes. Although we'll practise and build some postures over any theme, it doesn't matter when you begin. You will see your own progression over time, whenever you start. So don't put it off, or you may just never get round to it. There's no time like the present!

How do I pay and buy multiple classes?

I accept cash, online payments and cheques. You can buy 5 or 10 classes to use whenever convenient, there's no time limit on them.

How often should I do yoga?

Ideally, you should practise yoga daily, even if only for a short time per day. Few of us manage to fit in a daily practice to busy lives so don't feel bad if you don't. But practice makes perfect. It's just like any skill from knitting to wrestling.

Booking, in the finished site

Reserve a place in the class you want, in a couple of taps.

Today, booking is by email or phone — and that still works, and will keep working. The finished site adds a live class calendar for the four weekly classes and any workshop, so a new starter can reserve their free first class, and regulars can buy a block of 5 or 10 tickets, without waiting for a reply.
